Wooden Fencing Built for Hampton Roads
A well-built wood fence does more than enclose your yard — it boosts curb appeal, defines outdoor living space, and adds real value to your home. Cedar and pressure-treated pine are the two workhorses of Hampton Roads wood fencing — cedar is lighter, takes paint and stain beautifully, and ages with character; treated pine is highly resistant to rot and insects and stands up to the coastal climate.
Chesapeake Fence has been hand-crafting wooden fences across Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, and Hampton Roads since 1964. From classic stockade and picket fences to custom horizontal-slat and lattice-top designs, every fence is built post-by-post by our experienced crews.

Wood Fencing FAQs
What types of wood are most durable for fencing?
The most durable wood fencing options in Hampton Roads are pressure-treated southern pine and naturally rot-resistant cedar. Pressure-treated pine has the longest service life thanks to factory chemical treatment that resists rot, fungi, and termites. Cedar is naturally rot-resistant and ages beautifully without staining but weathers faster than treated pine. For longest lifespan, choose treated pine; for best aesthetics, choose cedar.
Will my wood fence rot in the Virginia coastal climate?
Hampton Roads humidity and salt air do shorten wood fence lifespan compared to drier climates, but a properly installed fence using pressure-treated posts and either cedar or treated pine pickets will last 15–25 years. We set every post in concrete at least 30 inches deep, leave a 1–2 inch gap between picket bottoms and grade, and seal the cut ends — all of which dramatically slow moisture-driven rot.
What styles of wood fences do you build?
We build every common wood-fence style in Hampton Roads: privacy (stockade, board-on-board, shadowbox), picket (3-foot through 5-foot in dog-ear, gothic, French gothic, and colonial profiles), split rail, lattice-top privacy, horizontal slat (modern), and fully custom designs. If you have a specific look in mind — a wood gate to match an existing fence, a custom-stained finish, or a one-off design — we’ll build it.
Should I paint or stain my wood fence?
Both extend the life of the wood, but we recommend stain over paint for fence applications. Stain penetrates the wood, flexes with seasonal expansion, and never peels — when it fades you re-coat without scraping. Paint sits on the surface, peels in 3–5 years in our climate, and requires sanding to refinish. Cedar takes stain beautifully; treated pine should be allowed to dry for 3–6 months after installation before staining.
